“What is it like to not be one of the 270 youth on any given night that are living in poverty in Calgary?”

Statistics show that about 1 in 270 youth in Calgary are categorized as impoverished on any given night. This number is exponentially larger for other areas, such as Toronto, where thousands of youth face poverty. Unfortunately, no matter how large the number, apathy continues to increase.
Wondering why, we asked the question: What about everyone else? We analyzed the different perspectives of young people in the city and concluded that this apathy stems not from a lack of feeling, but rather a lack of connection. Many cannot relate to a situation they have never experienced, and thus they often overlook impoverished youth.
To combat this effect we are hosting the #NOT1IN270 challenge, in which we ask for video submissions via social media from youth aged 14-24 in Canada to answer the question, “What is it like to not be one of the 270 youth on any given night that are living in poverty in Calgary?”
After the submission period, 100 Megawatts will pick the best 7 submissions and post them on our social media for a week. Using the responses, the information gathered will be recorded and executed on an infographic for people to see. Through this, we hope that there will be more of a focus on youth that don’t have the same things, that don’t get the same opportunities, or more importantly, the same access to education as others do.
By doing this, along with our team’s core value to enlighten, we aim to reduce apathy and to come together and work on a solution to break the barriers for the target population to access the resources and education needed to transition into a successful adulthood.
