“What do you think young people in shelters are struggling with most during COVID-19?”
With the Coronavirus outbreak, people were left looking out for themselves and their families with money and their health. Int his time of need, many forgot impoverished youth. Youth First is a project born out of a desire to respond to COVID-19 and help young people and their well-being in this time of need. It was formed by young people for young people, and it has a variety of initiatives all across Canada focusing on genuine connections, empathy, and support.
Alongside other organizations and individuals passionate about supporting youth and advocating for those in shelters, 100 Megawatts is a OYAG member of their Online Youth Advisory Group for their Youth in Shelters initiative.
Coming together with students from Ryerson’s Child and Youth Care program, and other like-minded individuals wanting to help, we discussed that it is especially difficult for youth during COVID-19, with the lack of structure, being in self-isolation, and having an extra burden, while also thinking of all the possible ways to help. The lack of structure presents uncertainty and discomfort, while being isolated leaves them feeling disconnected from others and the world around them. This is an additional challenge for all the other existing troubles they may already face in their situation.
As for youth in shelters, adding on to the list of issues presented, there may be a lack of resources and necessities within the shelter. Youth may not be getting the care and support they need for their well-being. Many shelters are now forced to house less youth, remove human interaction that is integral for them, and work with a deficit of resources.
With the brainstorming of ideas and the formation of action plans, 100 Megawatts is committed to help in the process of developing programs for shelters with less resources and connections.
We aim to provide support and break barriers for youth in shelters during this time of need.
